Major T.J. Geary serves as the Operations Bureau Commander with the University of ?South Carolina (USC) Division of Law Enforcement and Safety, after having risen through the ranks in various supervisory, mid-level leadership, and command staff roles. Prior to returning to the university in 2006, he served with the Lexington County (SC) Sheriff’s Department in various operational, training, and investigative positions.
Major Geary is a graduate of the 251st Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and earned a graduate certificate in criminal justice education from the University of Virginia in 2012. He earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from USC in 2002 and is currently pursuing his PhD in criminology.
Major Geary is the president of the South Carolina Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates. Having served on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association in various vice president roles beginning in 2017, he served as president of the 7,000-member organization for the 2021–22 term. He also served a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Foundation from 2021-2023.
Major Geary also engages in significant teaching and research activities. He serves as a senior instructor and subject matter expert for the Bureau of Justice Assistance VALOR program as well as adjunct faculty with the University of South Carolina.
